Change SMOKE and CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) alarm BATTERIES - Every Year
Remember to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms every year. A good rule of thumb is to change the batteries during Daylight Savings Time.
Properly working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms can save lives by alerting you to a fire or to poisonous carbon monoxide in your home. In order to work properly, alarms need fresh batteries at least once every year.
In addition to changing batteries every year, it is recommended that consumers test their alarms monthly. Place smoke alarms on every level of the home, outside sleeping areas and inside each bedroom. CO alarms should be installed on each level of the home and outside sleeping areas. CO alarms should not be installed in attics or basements unless they include a sleeping area.
CHANGE FILTERS
Not changing your filters may cause damage to your furnace and central air. When your furnace is running with a dirty and clogged furnace filter, it restricts the air flow across the heat exchanger, so it overheats and eventually cracks. During the summer a dirty furnace filter can cause the A/C compressor to burn out.

THERMOSTAT Batteries 
Although the thermostat has a low battery indicator, replace the batteries once a year to prevent the thermostat and heating/cooling system from shutting down due to a lack of battery power. The optimum schedule would be to replace the batteries every fall before the heating season.
